FUTURE - Transonic Combustion Engine Gets 98MPG/34KMPL

Eventually, we’d like to think that everyone will be driving around in all-electric cars. But in the meantime, it’s important to develop efficient gas engine technology. That’s where a new system from Transonic Combustion comes in. The California-based startup has developed a fuel-injection system that can improve the efficiency of gasoline engines by 50%.

A standard engine using Transonic Combustion’s system gets 64 miles per gallon in highway driving–even more impressive than hybrids like the Prius, which gets only 48 miles per gallon. So why is the system so effective? According to MIT Technology Review, “Transonic’s injection system varies from direct injection in two ways: it uses supercritical fluids and doesn’t require a spark to ignite the fuel. The supercritical fluid mixes quickly with air when it’s injected into the cylinder.” That means ignition can be timed so that it occurs at the piston’s optimal point–so minimal energy is wasted.

Transonic’s system also cuts down on “throttling losses”, which occur because  air intake to an engine is partially closed during cruising. That in turn makes the engine work harder. But with Transonic’s engine, air intake remains open, leading to an impressive mileage of 98 mpg at a cruising speed of 50 mph.

Want a Transonic system of your own? The company is building its first factory in 2013, and production is expected to begin in 2014.

Nokia N95 Solves a Rubik's Cube

Posted by Unknown Wednesday, February 3, 2010 0 comments

The Rubik's cube was the bane of my existence growing up. As a kid, I pried my dad's apart with a butter knife and reassembled it so it looked like I had solved the puzzle. While it was nothing compared to my old man's time of roughly 37 seconds, I was pretty proud of myself for cheating the classic puzzle. Then, when I was about seven years old, I left it in the driveway and it got hit by a neighbor's car. Bye-bye Rubik's Cube.

I haven't seen a solved Rubik's cube since so this video really brought back memories. Usually we'd give extra points for solving a 4x4x4 cube but given that this is a computer programmed to solve the puzzle, we don't think it matters how big the cube is.

Using an ARM processor, a lot of LEGO technic pieces and a Nokia N95, this machine scans each side of the puzzle, maps out the cube and then solves the puzzle accordingly.

Driving a Car with an iPhone

Posted by Unknown Monday, November 16, 2009 0 comments

Impressive stuff…

The goal of this project is to be able to remotely control an automobile. This involves building an automobile control system (ACS), and a remote system that sends commands to the ACS. These two systems are then connected by a wireless network to complete communication. This allows a controller - such as an iPhone, Power Wheels, computer, etc – to wirelessly command the car to actuate its pedals and steering. This document describes the implementation of each of these systems, as well as the different types of communication used for each controller.

2010 Honda Insight Hybrid Makes World Debut at the North American International Auto Show DETROIT,

Posted by Unknown Wednesday, January 21, 2009 0 comments

 Jan. 11, 2009 — The all-new 2010 Honda Insight hybrid car made
its world debut today at the North American International Auto Show.
Utilizing the latest generation of Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist™
(IMA®) hybrid technology and new, more cost-efficient production
methods, the 2010 Insight defines a new stage in the evolution of
hybrid technology, providing hybrid customers with a new level of
affordability, fun-to-drive performance, and a U.S. EPA city/highway
fuel-economy rating of 40/43 miles per gallon.

The 2010 Insight will be launched at Honda dealers throughout the
United States in the beginning of April 2009 and will be priced below
the Civic Hybrid.

"Honda hybrids have always offered great value, high fuel efficiency
and a healthy dose of fun near the middle price range in the Honda
lineup," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda.
"With the introduction of the all-new Insight, we're opening up Honda's
fun-to-drive, versatile and fuel-efficient hybrid technology to an
entirely new group of buyers that previously may not have considered a
hybrid because of either image or cost."

Evoking the advanced and aerodynamic five-door sedan design first
deployed on the revolutionary FCX Clarity fuel cell car, the new
Insight has a low center of gravity and a spacious five-passenger
cabin, offering the kind of driving experience and roomy, versatile
interior space that customers have come to expect from Honda.

To help Insight owners realize the full benefits of Honda hybrid
technology, the Insight will feature a new interactive, driver-focused
fuel economy enhancement technology named the Ecological Drive Assist
System (Eco Assist™). Eco Assist combines multiple functions:
  • A driver-activated ECON mode that optimizes control of
the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), engine and
related powertrain components to further improve vehicle fuel
    efficiency;
  • a driver feedback function that uses an
innovative speedometer display with changing background colors to
provide real-time guidance to the driver on achieving higher fuel
    efficiency; and
  • a unique fuel-economy scoring function
using a plant-leaf graphic to provide feedback to the driver on
current-trip driving efficiency and lifetime fuel-efficient driving
    performance.

All Insights are powered by an advanced 1.3-liter SOHC aluminum-alloy i-VTEC
engine and CVT, along with a new generation of Honda's IMA hybrid
system for exceptional fuel economy and fun-to-drive performance.

The Insight's IMA system incorporates a 10-kilowatt (13 hp) electric
motor and a compact Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) — recapturing and
storing kinetic energy from vehicle braking and deceleration and
supplying additional power for acceleration when needed. Packaging of
the ultra-compact IMA battery and IPU in the vehicle’s rear floor
allows the enhanced utility of a 60/40 split and fold-down rear seat
back.

The Insight's IMA system has the capability to operate exclusively on
electric power in certain low- to mid-speed driving conditions. It also
provides for cylinder deactivation within the gasoline engine during
deceleration and for engine shutoff when the vehicle is stopped. With a
10.6-gallon fuel tank, the Insight delivers an estimated maximum
driving range in excess of 400 miles.

Standard safety features on all Insights include dual-stage,
dual-threshold front airbags; front-side airbags with a passenger-side
Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side curtain airbag system;
anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD); driver- and
front-passenger active head restraints and a front body designed to
mitigate pedestrian injuries. All new Insights also feature Honda's
Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, which
provides improved crash compatibility between vehicles of different
size and ride height, enhancing protection for Insight occupants while
reducing the potential for injury to occupants of the opposing vehicle
in a frontal collision.

Additional standard features on all new Insights include 60/40 split
and fold-down rear seatbacks; two-tier digital instrument panels;
automatic climate control; power windows, mirrors and door locks; a
tilting and telescoping steering wheel and a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio
system with MP3 audio playback, an auxiliary audio input jack and
Speed-Sensitive Volume Control (SVC).

Insight EX models add alloy wheels, cruise control, 6-speaker audio
system with USB audio interface, steering-wheel mounted paddle
shifters, Honda Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) and an available Honda
Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with Voice Recognition.

Honda is a leader in developing cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicle
technologies, including the original Honda Insight, introduced as
America's first mass-produced hybrid car in December 1999. American
Honda has announced plans to increase its U.S. hybrid sales beyond the
new Insight with the introduction of a third hybrid car, based on the
Honda CR-Z concept vehicle, within the next couple of years. Honda is
also a leader in the development of advanced alternatives to gasoline,
including the zero-emission, hydrogen-powered Honda FCX Clarity fuel
cell car, the world’s most advanced production automobile.

Sony, SanDisk announce plans for 2TB Memory Sticks, high-speed Memory Stick HG Micro

Posted by Unknown Friday, January 9, 2009 1 comments

It's apparently not quite as far along as the newly-announced SDXC
card format, but Sony and SanDisk have just announced that they're
jointly developing a new Memory Stick format (tentatively dubbed the
"Memory Stick format for Extended High Capacity") that'll reach the
same dizzying 2TB heights as its SD counterpart. There's no more
details on the format beyond that, unfortunately, but the pair has also
announced that they're working on a new Memory Stick HG Micro format as
well, which promises to boast a blazing 60MBps maximum data transfer
speed. That's made possible, in part, thanks to a new 8-bit parallel
interface with an increased 60MHz interface clock frequency. Sadly,
there's no indication of a release date either of 'em, with the
companies only going so far as to say that format licensing for both
new formats is "scheduled to start in 2009."

400GB Blu-ray discs here now! 1TB discs in 2013

Posted by Unknown Tuesday, December 9, 2008 0 comments

ioneer is now showcasing the biggest Blu-ray disc ever that can hold 400 GB worth of data! w00t.gif

The
technology features 16 separate layers on a single-side Blu-ray disc
with 25 GB storage capacity on each layer, which totals 400 GB. Metal
Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima must be giddy about the prospects,
seeing as how he loves lengthy cutscenes and the highest definition
assets possible.

"The
technology of the super multi-layer read-only disc is based on Blu-ray
Disc (BD) with a breakthrough in material of reflective layers,
according to Pioneer High Fidelity Taiwan. The specifications of the
pick-up head (PUH) of the disc is the same as those for the PUH of
blank BD discs, and therefore the Pioneer discs can be read on BD
players, the company said."

Pioneer
says the development plans are to create these super read-only discs in
2008-2010, rewritable discs in 2010-2012, and 1 TB discs in 2013.

Amazing DSLR new releases

Posted by Unknown Saturday, September 20, 2008 0 comments

When Nikon announced that the new D90 would be capable of shooting
videos, we were stoked. A DSLR with video shooting capabilitie was, up
till then, unheard of. Understandably so, DSLR purists were busy crying
blasphemy, while the rest of the general public (us included) were
foaming with excitement.

As if that wasn't heart stopping enough, camp Canon
decided that Nikon had garnered enough attention and decided to drop a
bomb of their own - by launching the Canon5D Mark II,
Stateside earlier today. In true competitive spirit, the 5D Mk II
one-ups the D90's 24fps video capabilities with full frame 1090i (i.e.
HD) 30fps video capabilities.

Now, we're (or at least I) no experts when it comes
to the topic of how DSLRs work, but we couldn't help but constantly
wonder, why now? Why did it take so long for DSLRs to adopt the video
capturing function, when smaller, cheaper compact cameras have already
been doing it for ages? Well, it looks like we're not the only one's
asking this, because the guys over at the Giz have actually posted up a quick and simple explanation in response to this very same question.

"The biggest challenge to overcome is also the most vague and
nebulous, and is the one part of digital cameras most of us never think
about. Processing is each manufacturer's secret sauce (that's why we
never hear a MHz number or any other specs). It's where a huge portion
of the engineering dollars go to—and where most of the patents come
from.

The data dumped out by a DSLR's large sensor is a lot to
swallow—orders of magnitude more than what even the baddest compact
digicam can process into video. So for instance, the 5D Mk II's Digic
IV processor must take the 21MP, full-frame sensor data and downsample
it by 10x to 1920 x 1080 and compress it into MPEG4 encoding—and it has
to do that 30 times each second. That's a lot of CPU power, and Canon
and Nikon both only just got there, with Digic IV and Expeed,
respectively.
"

The full article is available here,
and since we posted this before actually posting anything about the new
5D Mk II, the full press release will be available after the jump.
