FUTURE - Transonic Combustion Engine Gets 98MPG/34KMPL

Posted by Danushka Marasinghe Tuesday, March 16, 2010 1 comments

Eventually, we’d like to think that everyone will be driving around in all-electric cars. But in the meantime, it’s important to develop efficient gas engine technology. That’s where a new system from Transonic Combustion comes in. The California-based startup has developed a fuel-injection system that can improve the efficiency of gasoline engines by 50%.

A standard engine using Transonic Combustion’s system gets 64 miles per gallon in highway driving–even more impressive than hybrids like the Prius, which gets only 48 miles per gallon. So why is the system so effective? According to MIT Technology Review, “Transonic’s injection system varies from direct injection in two ways: it uses supercritical fluids and doesn’t require a spark to ignite the fuel. The supercritical fluid mixes quickly with air when it’s injected into the cylinder.” That means ignition can be timed so that it occurs at the piston’s optimal point–so minimal energy is wasted.

Transonic’s system also cuts down on “throttling losses”, which occur because  air intake to an engine is partially closed during cruising. That in turn makes the engine work harder. But with Transonic’s engine, air intake remains open, leading to an impressive mileage of 98 mpg at a cruising speed of 50 mph.

Want a Transonic system of your own? The company is building its first factory in 2013, and production is expected to begin in 2014.

Main causes of Brain Damage

Posted by Danushka Marasinghe Friday, March 12, 2010 0 comments

here are various brain damaging habits like no breakfast, overeating, smoking, high sugar consumption, air pollution, sleep deprivation etc. We should try to prevent all of these. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important.
1. No Breakfast

People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.
2. Overeating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.
3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.
4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.
5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.
6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.
7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.
8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.
9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.
10. Talking Rarely
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain.

Nokia N95 Solves a Rubik's Cube

Posted by Danushka Marasinghe Wednesday, February 3, 2010 0 comments

The Rubik's cube was the bane of my existence growing up. As a kid, I pried my dad's apart with a butter knife and reassembled it so it looked like I had solved the puzzle. While it was nothing compared to my old man's time of roughly 37 seconds, I was pretty proud of myself for cheating the classic puzzle. Then, when I was about seven years old, I left it in the driveway and it got hit by a neighbor's car. Bye-bye Rubik's Cube.

I haven't seen a solved Rubik's cube since so this video really brought back memories. Usually we'd give extra points for solving a 4x4x4 cube but given that this is a computer programmed to solve the puzzle, we don't think it matters how big the cube is.

Using an ARM processor, a lot of LEGO technic pieces and a Nokia N95, this machine scans each side of the puzzle, maps out the cube and then solves the puzzle accordingly.
